Rooks can move to any square up or down, or from side to side. 

They are worth 5 points and are considered a major piece. Each side starts with 2 rooks. 

The white rook on c2 has 8 legal moves.

A rook captures the way it moves, just like every other piece except the pawn. 

In the next study, we'll see the most valuable and strongest piece: the queen!

If Black defends one pawn, White can take the other one.

Black's rook, on the other hand, doesn't have that many moves. 

It has some along the 8th rank, but it's blocked on the c-file by its own pawn.

Rook to c5 is a strong move that helps you attack the a5-pawn. 

Because a rook can move up but also horizontally, it will be able to take the a5-pawn.

But Black's rook could also move sideways to a7.
