A chess game ends when the king is in check and it does not have a way to get out of check. 

This situation is called a checkmate. 

In this position, it is Black to move. Black may be heavily tempted to win the queen.

This is checkmate. White wins the game, ending it on the spot. 

The white rook attacks the king. Black does not have any of the escape mechanisms we explored in study 1. 

Black cannot block the check, capture the rook or move the king away. 

Black's 3 pawns on f7, g7 and h7 block the king's path out of the 8th rank. The king is trapped and White gives an easy checkmate.

Black's rook takes the queen. 

The problem with this move is that it leaves the 8th rank undefended. 

This gives White an opportunity to go on the 8th rank and checkmate the black king.
