My favorite opening in chess is the Caro-Kann Defense. 

It happens after 1. e4 c6. 

The point is to play ...d5 with the support of the pawn on c6.

The last option we'll explore is if White defends the e4-pawn.

Let's first see the advance. This move may be hard for us to face because the e5-pawn controls the f6-square.

And we bring this knight to d7 to avoid Ne5.

And we'll do the same. 

Thanks to ...e6 we'll be able to play ...Be7. Ngf6 and 0-0 are also our ideas.

Often, you get a good pawn structure out of the Caro-Kann, and are able to defend against White's attacks. That's why I recommend this opening.

And Black develops the light-squared bishop before playing ...e6.

These positions after the exchange Caro-Kann end up being very symmetrical.

This is the classical variation of the Caro-Kann.

However, I really like this gambit-like move. 

We're offering the c5-pawn.

Bg4 pins the knight and the e5-pawn is under attack again. 

Your queenside minor pieces are out and you'll be attacking c5 after ...e6.

White defends. 

But now you can develop another piece with a tempo.

4...e6 is also playable. 

But 4...Nc6 attacks e5.

And Black has the plan of ...Be7 and 0-0 to complete development. 

This is a solid position and you should be equal out of the opening.

And we strike at the center right away.

White has three choices now: to advance, take on d5 or defend the pawn.
