This is the Alapin Variation of the Sicilian Defense, which starts after 1. e4 c5 2. c3. Your entire point is to get the pawn to d4 and have something that resembles the 10 Golden Moves. We don't quite get that, but we do get our knights out and two pawns in the center.

Let's practice playing the king's pawn versus the Sicilian Defense!

Can you push the pawn up and avoid the capture on e4?

Can you block and develop? Knights before bishops!

Can you prepare the d4-pawn push using another pawn?

Black plays their e-pawn up, perhaps preparing ...d5.
