This is how the pieces are set up in chess and how you need to have them to start a game. 

We'll get into how each piece moves in the following studies, but for now let's take a look at how the White pieces are on the 1st and 2nd rank and the Black pieces are on the 7th and 8th rank. 

Each player should have a light square on their right side when looking at the chess board.

There should be a light square on your right hand side.

The queens go on the square of their color to start the game.
