The king can move to a square in any direction. 

It's the most important piece because if the king is attacked and checkmated, White loses.

Since it can only move one square at a time, its movement is quite limited. 

At the beginning of a game, you won't move your king around that much because you want to keep it safe. 

But when the majority of the pieces are off the board, you'll be able to move the king around more.

The king is the only piece that cannot willingly walk into danger. 

We'll learn why when we study checks. But basically, an attack on a king is called a check. A king cannot put itself on check ever. That's why Black here only has 6 possible moves.

I do want to show you how a king captures, though. 

A king can capture an undefended piece by using its natural range of movement. 

Try it out on your own board!

White could continue pushing their pawn because the a-pawn will promote to a queen. 

The black king cannot get to it on time.

Black can also move their king and they are attacking the e5-pawn with it.

White could defend this pawn and now Black cannot capture it with the king.

The king is the only piece in chess that cannot capture a defended piece according to the rules. When checks and checkmates are explained, we'll see a few examples more!
