In this study, we'll learn a tactic known as the pin. 

A pin is when you attack a piece that cannot move because there's a piece of greater value behind it. In an absolute pin, the piece cannot move because the king is behind it.

Black takes the d4-pawn. White can now create an absolute pin.

If Black defends the knight, White has the option of attacking the pinned piece. You don't want to take a pinned piece right away. 

First, you want to attack it a bit more.

There are now two attackers. 

Black cannot defend anymore.

White had to take on d4 as soon as the pin was removed.

The knight on d4 cannot move because doing so puts the king in check, and that's illegal.

If Black gets rid of the pin by moving the king, they lose the knight.

The king moves and gets rid of the pin. 

White has to take now or else the knight can move away and defend the rook!

Otherwise, the knight can escape. 

There wasn't a relative pin on the rook because the knight can go to a place where it defends its ally.
